Finding balance living with an ADHD Child

I have 2 children, one of which has challenges in which our family works daily to overcome.  My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was in first grade.  It has been 6 years and he is now in middle school.  After much thought and research we chose not to medicate, not because I am totally against medication as I do feel medication has it's place, but I have wanted to do everything I can possibly do and use medication only as a last resort.  When he was first diagnosed we began using a supplement called Added Attention; we did see some improvement but through time it didn't seem like enough.  I began to dig deeper to see what else I could do to help him and discovered a supplement called pine tree bark extract which we began to give him instead of the Added Attention because we noticed a significant difference.  This was all within the first year of him being diagnosed.  Within the past year we discovered that studies show that kids with ADHD tend to be deficient in magnesium and have begun supplementing him in addition to the pine tree bark extract.  It is amazing how much improvement he has shown.

Before my son was introduced to supplements life was incredibly difficult.  He had tremendous mood swings and when one hit it took literally an hour to bring him back around.  He might cry over spilling a drink and be totally inconsolable for an hour, or something might make him angry and he'd be out of control for at least a good hour.  Nothing we did was able to settle him down to understand that everything was going to be okay.

Life is so much better now, but we do still have our issues from time to time.  He still is full of life and energy, which is great in some settings but in others it does still sometimes create a challenge.  I love who he is and hope to see him work through some of these struggles.  As a family we are determined to get through them together.
